I am sick of all these claims made by numerous Cloud Hosting providers that are no more than an attempt to cash-in on a (relatively) new marketing term.

From the simplest non-techie perspective, Cloud Hosting means that it is immaterial WHERE your ‘stuff’ lives as it should work from SOMEWHERE ELSE in the event of a failure occurring where it is RIGHT NOW.

I know of several hosts with hundreds or thousands of clients that host on a bunch of standalone servers!!!!

If the one you are on dies, good luck getting them to restore your stuff to another ‘working’ piece of equipment in a reasonable timeframe. Assuming of course that they even have backups suitable for restoration.

Even some of the ‘big boys’ don’t set it up so that your services will restart somewhere else automatically in the event of a failure.

Sorry, but having to migrate a backup to a piece of equipment somewhere ‘else’ is not my idea of ‘Cloud Hosting’.

Ask the bloody question of your hosting company and don’t settle for an answer you don’t understand!!!!

Got us back to Page Rank 6 mid-last week.

Tried a few more little tweaks today, hopefully they’ll get us moving onto PR7 in the next few weeks.

Unless of course they continue tweaking their algorithms.

That’s something guaranteed to give you a perpetual headache, trying to figure out what Google’s doing whilst they try and stop everyone else doing what they’re doing.

Can’t seem to get this one right.

I’m on-call on Saturdays and off on Sundays. Sounds simple, right.

Then how come I can’t get into it on Saturday. Spend time having coffee…reading the papers…doing a fry up for breakfast (or if I’m really lucky, getting hot dogs and doughnuts from Vic Market)…doing the big 5-grid Soduku in the Age Magazine. Sometimes even get to check my emails once or twice. Won’t action any of them unless they’re mega-urgent, but will at least check to see.

Then on Sunday, I spend time doing what should have been done on Saturday!!

And NO!!!! I don’t like working weekends and am definitely NOT a workaholic (not by my definition anyway, see below). But when things are so flat-out you sometimes do things you would rather not.

Come to think of it, maybe that’s why I can’t get going on Saturday’s…..just too worn out from the week.

By my personal definition…workaholic (n) –

a) someone who works when there is no reason to, or,

b) someone who works because that is all that matters to them, or that work is the most important thing in their life
